New Haven took on the Rider University Broncos for a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon and lost 0-4.
The first goal of the goal came off the stick of Rider’s Anna Finn about 13 minutes into the first quarter. The Chargers’ defense was able to hold back the Broncos until the second quarter, when Finn added her second goal less than a minute into the quarter for the Broncos, elevating their lead to 2-0 at halftime.
The third quarter went scoreless on both sides, which meant the Chargers were going into the final 15 minutes down by two. Unfortunately for New Haven, the Broncos brought the energy, scoring two goals in the last quarter. The first one came from Rider’s Emma Bonshak off of a corner shot, assisted by Megan Normile. The second and final goal for the Broncos was off Valeria Perales, once again assisted by Normile.
New Haven senior defender Eliza Caven tallied the only shot on goal of the night for the Chargers, and senior forward Brynna Courneen also finished with one shot. Sophomore goalkeeper Rae Kline totaled eight saves on the night, a career high.
The Chargers are now 0-8 overall and have an 0-3 record in the Northeast Conference. New Haven will take the field again on Friday, Oct. 3 at Merrimack College. The game is slated for 4:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.newhavenchargers.com.
