The Chargers women’s lacrosse team split a two-game stretch last week, earning a strong conference win over the Howard University Bisons before falling to the Stonehill College Skyhawks in a non-conference matchup.
New Haven opened the week with an 11-9 victory over Howard, driven by one of the most efficient offensive performances of the season. The Chargers established control early, using draw dominance and quick-ball movement to generate high percentage scoring opportunities. Their pace in transition consistently disrupted Howard’s defensive structure and allowed New Haven to build a multi goal advantage within the first quarter.
AttackerCaitlin Seleny led the offensive effort with a program standout performance, recording eight assists. Her ability to facilitate from behind the cage and in settled offense created consistent breakdowns in Howard’s defense. The Chargers displayed balanced scoring throughout the lineup, with multiple players finishing scoring sequences off assisted looks and fast break opportunities.
New Haven’s defense limited Howard’s possessions through controlled clears and pressure on ball carriers. The Chargers forced turnovers in the midfield and restricted second chance opportunities, allowing their offense to maintain extended time of possession. The defensive unit, combined with steady goalkeeping, held Howard to single digit scoring and prevented any sustained momentum shifts. Goalkeeper Ainsley Bourbeau had 14 saves during 60 minutes of play.
Statistically, the game reflected New Haven’s control across all phases. The Chargers held advantages in draw controls, shots on goal and assists, highlighting both possession dominance and offensive efficiency. Attacker Helena Dunwoody led New Haven with five goals, followed by two from attacker Sophia Minnion. Four other Chargers were able to put points on the board to secure the win over the Bisons.
However, that momentum did not carry into Saturday’s matchup against Stonehill, where New Haven lost, 21-7. Stonehill dictated the pace early, capitalizing on draw control success and converting possessions into quick scoring runs. The Skyhawks built an early lead, forcing New Haven to play from behind for the majority of the contest.
The Chargers struggled to generate consistent offensive rhythm against Stonehill’s defensive pressure. While New Haven created opportunities in settled sets, execution in the attacking third was inconsistent, with missed chances and turnovers limiting their ability to close the gap. Despite individual scoring contributions, the offense lacked the fluid ball movement that defined the Howard win.
New Haven’s defense faced sustained pressure as Stonehill maintained possession through draw control wins. The Skyhawks capitalized on transition opportunities and efficient shooting, extending their lead in the second half.
Seleny and attacker Taryn Murphy both put up two goals for the Chargers. Attacker Sophia Devaney, midfielder Lucy Shafer and Minnion each scored once. Bourbeau had seven saves at goal. The Chargers took 21 shots, 14 on goal, and won 12 draw controls while Skyhawks won 16. New Haven committed 16 turnovers and finished 1-for-2 in free-position shots.
The women’s lacrosse team now has an overall record of 3-9 and 2-5 in conference play. The Chargers will host the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) Blue Devils for a senior day conference matchup. Draw is at 1 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium and the game will be streamed on NEC Front Row. For more information visit NewHavenChargers.com.
