In recent matchups against the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) Knights and the George Washington University (GWU) Revolutionaries, the Chargers were shut out 4-0 and 7-0, respectively.
Sophomore Victoria Togores and junior Pierina Lescher were swept 6-0 in the first doubles match against FDU. Junior Manon Hallemans and freshman Sofia Lázaro faced the Knights’ Valentina Silva and Katsiaryna Kostsina and lost 6-2. Senior Valentinna Ferrarini and freshman Addison Rosser led their match with a score of 4-2, but the game went unfinished.
In the six singles matches, none of the Chargers secured a win, with three of the games declared unfinished. Ferrarini faced Anastasia Lim and lost the first set 6-4 before trailing 2-1 in the second set. Togores competed in the second singles match against Sophia Fredericks-McKee and lost a close first set 7-5. She led the second set 1-0 before the match was called off. Lescher faced Oleksandra Ovsiienko and lost 6-4, trailing 5-0 before the match was unfinished.
Lazaro went up against Silva in the fourth match and lost 6-2 and 6-1, respectively. The Knights’ Kostsina defeated Hallemans in the fifth singles match. Both sets finished with a score of 6-1. In the final singles, Rosser fell short to Ann Kato with a score of 6-1 in the first set and 6-4 in the second.
In the match against the Revolutionaries, the Chargers put more points on the board but ultimately faced the same outcome.
In the first doubles match, Togores and Lescher lost to their opponents Madison Lee and Karen Verduzco 6-3, while freshman Petra Horvath and Hallemans were swept 6-0. In a close match against the Revolutionaries’ Devika Manu and Alexandra Lindqvist, Rosser and Lazaro lost 7-5.
Ferrarini competed in the first singles game against Solange Skeene but lost 6-3 in the first set and 6-4 in the second set. Togores put up a tough fight in the second singles match but fell short by two points and finished the first set with a score of 7-5, followed by a 6-3 loss in the second. GWU’s Lee defeated Lazaro with a score of 6-4 and 6-3, respectively in the third singles match.
Hallemans went up against Lindqvist and lost 6-1 in the first set followed by a 6-2 loss in the second. Junior Micaela Rosignuolo faced Verduzco and lost 6-0 and 6-2 respectively. Sophomore Leni Bischof competed against Manu and lost the first set 7-6 with a tiebreaker score of 6-3. Bischof fell short 6-1 in the second set.
After the loss to FDU and GWU, the tennis team has a record of 8-7 and 3-1 in conference play. The Chargers will be back in action on Saturday for their final game of the season against the Queens College Knights. First serve is TBD at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
