Coming off a five-game losing streak, the Chargers fell short again on the road, and took a tough 14-0 loss against the University of Massachusetts Lowell Riverhawks.
The Riverhawks stepped on the gas early and often, with the first goal of the night coming just 40 seconds into the first quarter, off the stick of Rena Pistilli, assisted by Madison Leeper. Despite efforts from the Chargers’ defense, the Riverhawks found the back of the cage for the second goal of the quarter from Karli Penrod, assisted by Christina Wagner.
The second quarter saw high scoring from UMass Lowell’s offense, with five goals scored from the Riverhawks’ Haley Wernig, Alice Van Hemelen, Alexa Guarneri and two from Ava Clarke. In the third, Penrod found the cage again with another assist from Wagner. UMass Lowell added another to their lead just a minute later with a goal from Guarneri, while the last goal of the third quarter was scored by Karlijn Kerkhof.
The fourth and final quarter saw four more goals from the Riverhawks, with Clarke pulling off a hat-trick against New Haven. The other three goals were added by UMass Lowell’s Leeper, Helena Herlocher and Kathryn Guertin.
Freshman goalkeeper Anne Marie Martin recorded 10 saves in the first half of the match, while sophomore goalkeeper Rae Kline denied eight in the second half. New Haven was unable to put a shot on goal, outmatched by the Riverhawks’ 33.
New Haven also hosted the Wagner College Seahawks on Sunday night and lost, 7-1. Senior forward Erin Smith scored the Chargers’ only goal of the night, with the assist accredited to senior defender Eliza Caven. New Haven totaled nine shots on goal compared to Wagner’s 25.
