The Chargers softball team faced off against the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) Knights as well as the Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) Blue Devils and lost both series.
New Haven split its series against FDU, dropping the opener 5-0 before bouncing back to win the final two games. In game one, the Chargers were limited to just two hits and struck out three times, while FDU tallied 10 hits and capitalized on early scoring to take control.
The Chargers responded in game two with a 9-6 victory, recording 15 hits and scoring eight RBIs. Bri Pellicone led the offense, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Cori Wilton added three of her own. New Haven used a four-run seventh inning to pull away, highlighted by RBI hits from Pellicone and Peyton Sullivan. Cecelia Imbimbo earned the win in relief, allowing just one earned run over five innings.
In the series finale, New Haven secured a 5-3 win, finishing with 10 hits. Kylie Thorpe led the way with a 3-for-3 performance, including a home run, while Jessica Petit and Brianna Trueman each drove in runs. After trailing early, the Chargers scored three runs in the seventh inning to seal the comeback victory. Imbimbo again picked up the win in relief, tossing five innings and allowing just one run while striking out three.
New Haven dropped all three games in its series against CCSU, beginning with a 2-0 loss before falling 11-3 and 10-5 in the final two matchups.
In the opener, the Chargers were limited to four hits and struck out 11 times, struggling to generate offense against Liz Hamilton. Katie Rhodes pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out three, but New Haven could not capitalize offensively.
In game two, the Chargers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind RBI hits from Lucia Ceccarelli and Bella Chenet, finishing with seven hits overall. However, Central Connecticut responded with a five-run fourth inning and added six more runs in the fifth to pull away. Defensive struggles hurt New Haven, as the team committed three errors that contributed to the Blue Devils’ scoring surge.
New Haven totaled six hits in a 10-5 loss in the series finale, highlighted by a two-run home run from Jessica Petit and a three-RBI performance. Emily Ricci added two hits and an RBI, while the Chargers also drew five walks. Despite scoring in four different innings, New Haven could not keep pace with Central Connecticut’s offense, as Grace Lawton led the Blue Devils with two home runs and seven RBIs.
The Chargers showed offensive strength in their two wins over FDU, combining for 24 hits and using late-inning rallies to secure both victories. However, they struggled to carry that momentum forward, managing just 10 runs across three games against CCSU while giving up 23, including a four-hit shutout loss in the opener.
Following the series losses, the softball team has an overall record of 7-26 and 5-13 in NEC play. The Chargers will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face the University of Rhode Island (URI) Rams for a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
