After suffering a loss against the University of Albany Great Danes, the New Haven Chargers faced the La Salle University Explorers, but lost 9-1.
In the beginning of the first quarter, the Explorers were quick to apply offensive pressure and scored a goal within five minutes. La Salle put up two more shots during the period, but both were saved by goalkeeper Cara Lambert. The Chargers offense could not find any sort of momentum against the Explorers defense and were unable to make any shot attempts.
La Salle’s Gabrielle Lacroix made the first shot attempt in the second quarter, but it went too wide. Forward Erin Smith made the first attempt at goal for the Chargers, followed by a shot from defender Eliza Caven, but both were blocked by La Salle’s goalkeeper, Abby Boggs. The Explorers tallied two fouls before Darian Las Deleo secured the second goal off an assist from Lacroix.
Early in the third quarter, forward Jalia Cooper put the Chargers on the board off an assist from forward Brynna Courneen. La Salle quickly responded back with a goal from Shea Burns on her second attempt. The remainder of the third quarter was back-and-forth play between the Chargers and the Explorers. La Salle’s Annabel Leussink took a shot at the goal cage, but Lambert made the save. Midfielder Carina Ramirez took the final attempt for the Chargers, but the shot was wide. With little less than two minutes remaining in the quarter, the Explorer’s Jeanne Legast scored a goal and advanced La Salle’s lead to 4-1.
In the final quarter, the Chargers’ defense could not match the Explorers’ relentless offensive pressure. After a shot attempt saved by Lambert at goal, Burns and Lacroix went back-to-back with goals of their own. New Haven’s offense struggled to find an opening while Lambert saved four consecutive goals within a minute. La Salle struck again with a goal from Matilda Diedrichsen shortly followed by an additional goal from Leussink. After a series of substitutions, Diedrichsen struck the back of the goal cage for the final goal of the match.
New Haven finished the game with four shot attempts and three on goal, while La Salle had 27 attempts, with 21 on goal. Lambert had 11 saves and the Chargers finished with one foul.
With the loss against La Salle, the Chargers move to an overall record of 0-3. On Friday, the Chargers will host the Sacred Heart University Pioneers for their first home game of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
