The women’s soccer team tied 1-1 against the Saint Francis University (SFU) Red Flash, and ended their eight game losing streak.
The Red Flash opened the scoring first as Riley Kerr deposited an unassisted shot past the Chargers’ goalkeeper, Caitlin Daley, just 38 seconds after a New Haven offsides penalty. Aside from offside penalties on both sides, the first period concluded without another goal scored and a 1-0 SFU lead with 45 minutes of play remaining.
The second period began with little action for the majority of the half, until about the 81 minute mark, when New Haven’s Emma Mitchell tied the game for the Chargers with 8:35 of play remaining. Janayah Body is credited with the assist on the tying goal. The Chargers would attempt four more shots in the final eight minutes, and Daley would save a go-ahead goal with 48 seconds on the clock to keep the game tied, as the contest ended as a 1-1 draw.
This result kept both teams winless, although the Chargers picked up their first non-loss of the 2025 season. After the tie, the Chargers have an overall record of 0-8-1. The Chargers attempted 17 total shots on goal, while three made it to the net. The Red Flash attempted 24 shots, while 11 were at goal. Daley saved 10 out 11 shots for New Haven, a huge part in keeping the game tied and avoiding a ninth straight defeat upon the beginning of a transition to Division I athletics. On the opposing side, Emma Sawich only faced three shots on goal all evening, stopping two.
Mitchell’s fourth goal of the season ties her for fifth among NEC leaderboards, along with SFU’s Riley Kerr, Dominique Liberto and Delaware State University’s Trinity Surowiec. She is only three goals behind the NEC lead of seven goals held by Stonehill College’s Hannah Anselmo. Mitchell’s nine overall points also rank fourth, six behind Anselmo for the NEC lead.
Next up, the Chargers will travel to Brookville, NY for a conference matchup with the Long Island (LIU) Sharks on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Sharks currently place second in the NEC with a 3-0-1 conference record and a 5-2-3 overall record. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
