After a draw against Syracuse University, the Chargers looked to break away from their two game tie streak and defeat the George Washington University (GWU) Revolutionaries. With a strong defensive performance, the Chargers tied the Revolutionaries, 0-0.
GWU started the game aggressively and put the Chargers on their heels and on their own side of the field for the majority of the first half. Six minutes into the match, the Chargers shot their first attempt by Matthew Salinas who just barely missed the goal in the top left corner. GWU took their first shot attempt in the twenty fourth minute, which goalkeeper Alessandro Bizzini denied. Bizzini finished the match with five saves. New Haven’s Daniel Ehlin, Jacopo Suagher, Lorenzo Garbarino and Marc Jourdain played all 90 minutes defensively, while Ehlin stood out, especially as a defensive force. After the block by Bizinni, the Chargers were aggressive on the attack, and made five shot attempts in ten minutes. The Revolutionaries countered with four shot attempts of their own late in the first period, which would be their last shots of the match. Bizzini has turned away 17 of 18 shots faced this season, including the last 15 against him.
After halftime, the Chargers stayed aggressive, pushed their offense and applied pressure on GWU. Early in the second half, New Haven’s Guilherme Meira shot low to the bottom right corner of the goal which was saved by GWU’s Tom Macauley. Following another missed shot from UNH, the Chargers got two fouls within two minutes due to high intensity defense. With time running down in the match, there were shots by both GWU and UNH, but in the 88th minute, New Haven had another shot opportunity with Meira which was denied. Only 40 seconds later, Joao Pires shot and missed left of the goal to end the game.
New Haven finished the game with a total of 11 attempted shots, and GWU finished with 12 shot attempts, neither team able to reach the back of the goal cage. For this being New Haven’s first home game at the D1 level, there was great energy and school spirit.
After the tie, New Haven still stands with a lossless beginning to their season. Their new record is 2-0-3, and they advance to a three game tie streak. On Tuesday, the Chargers will be on the road to face the Quinnipiac University Bobcats. The game will be held in Hamden, CT at 4 p.m. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
