The Chargers volleyball team fell short against the Bryant University Bulldogs on Tuesday, 0-3.
The Chargers came out strong in the first set in Smithfield, Rhode Island, and scored first off a kill from middle blocker Kira Lynch. The match was back and forth until the Bulldogs went on a six-point run that New Haven could not match. Despite a last-minute surge that tied the set 23-23, Bryant came out on top with a score of 23-25, barely taking the game.
New Haven totaled a match-high of nine kills in the first set.
The Bulldogs kept their foot on the gas during the second set of the match and went on a seven-point run early on. The Chargers struggled to keep up but remained at a ten-plus point deficit. Bryant secured the second victory of the match after a service error from New Haven that finalized the score 11-25.
The third set started with a five-point run from the Bulldogs, but the Chargers fought back with a seven-point run of their own. Eventually, New Haven was down,14-15 when Bryant pulled off an eight-point. The final set ended,15-25, in favor of the Bulldogs.
Middle blocker Naliah Grannell led the Chargers with four kills and four blocks, with New Haven’s Lauren MacKellar close behind with three of each. Hannah Adderly also added three kills, and Lynch had two kills and two blocks. Setter Caroline Johnston totaled a team-high five kills and 11 digs, while also adding five assists to her stats. Setter Juli De Acharan also had 11 assists and five digs.
The Chargers also took on the Stonehill College Skyhawks at the Skyhawk Invitational on Friday and Saturday. New Haven lost a close match on Friday, 2-3, but they bounced back on Saturday night and took their second win of the season, 3-2.
The Chargers now have a record of 2-8. They will host the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights at 6 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
