The Chargers faced off against the Yale University Bulldogs men’s soccer team for a non-conference matchup in the “Battle for New Haven”.
The Chargers entered the contest with a record of 4-2-3, and looked to win their second consecutive game and fifth overall. The Bulldogs entered at 1-6-2, coming off their first win of the season.
New Haven’s Andrew Miranda secured his first goal of the season just 66 seconds into play, and gave the Chargers an early 1-0 lead. Aside from two Charger fouls, the match remained scoreless for 31 minutes until the Bulldogs tied the game off a goal from Billy Altirs. Shortly after, Yale’s Nathan Harmon obtained his first goal of the season and the Bulldogs took back the lead, 2-1. Before the first period ended, two more fouls were called on the Chargers.
At the start of the second period, the Chargers made a change in goal and sent Alessandro Bizzini to the goal in place of Tuesday’s starter, Shane Antao. Bizzinni held Yale off the scoreboard in the second, but unfortunately the Chargers were stymied offensively as Yale staved off the Chargers, 2-1.
Antao, who started in goal, faced five shots. He stopped three and allowed two goals. Bizzinni only faced a single shot in 45 minutes, and stopped the lone shot on goal. The Chargers attempted 14 shots, but only landed two on the net and scored once.
There were also four yellow cards handed out, all in the second period. The first was to New Haven’s Bernardo Carola, and the next three were all to Yale. Simon Adjakple, Jorik Dammann and Angelo Zhu each received one, with the first being not even a minute after Carola’s, and the final card just over a minute before play was concluded.
After the loss, New Haven’s record fell to 4-3-3. New Haven will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to face the Saint Francis University Friars. The match will be held in Loretto, PA and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
