After facing Saint Anselm College and Southern New Hampshire University, the Chargers softball team had a quick turnaround as they faced the Adelphi University Panthers for a double-header and split the series, 1-1.
After dropping game one, the Chargers came out hungry in game two. Designated hitter Peyton Sullivan walked in the top of the second inning to become the first base runner of the game for both sides. Third base Allison Murai then reached on an error after bunting down the third base line. Once on, Murai also collected a stolen base, and gave the Chargers two in scoring position. Second base Kylie Thorpe singled on a bunt and drove in Sullivan from third. Thorpe went on to steal second base but Adelphi quickly bounced back and scored a run on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Adelphi took the lead in the bottom of the third on another sacrifice fly to center field. It was not until the top of the sixth when the Chargers tied the game on a double by catcher Brianna Trueman, which drove in center fielder Bella Chenet after she was hit by a pitch. The top of the seventh saw the Chargers offense scratch together one more run. The inning started with another hit by Thorpe, this time a double down the left field line. Right fielder Olivia Roberto walked before getting out on a fielder’s choice the next play. Chenet then drove in the winning run after an error from the Panthers’ second base.
New Haven gave another dominant performance on the mound, this time by starting pitcher Katie Rhodes. Rhodes pitched a complete game, and only gave up five hits and one walk with two runs scored. She induced a total of 17 fly balls and threw a total of 71 pitches.
The Chargers went on to face the Pace University Setters for a double-header on Friday. New Haven fell short 5-0 in the first game and lost the second game, 7-0.
After the win, the Chargers improve to an overall record of 10-24 and 3-9 in NE10 play. New Haven will be back in action Wednesday to face the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Seaside Park. For more information, please visit newhavenchargers.com
