The University of New Haven men’s and women’s track and field teams delivered strong performances at the Wesleyan January Indoor Invite in Middletown, CT. The event provided an opportunity for several Chargers to shine across a variety of events, adding momentum as they progress through the indoor season.
Freshman Wilnye Joseph led off the meet with an outstanding performance in the women’s high jump, with a clearance of 1.52 meters, which earned her a second place finish. Senior Isabella Bostic also cleared 1.52 meters, but finished just behind Joseph in third place. After a clearance of 2.95 meters in the women’s pole vault competition, junior Molly Clark finished in second place.The field events also featured impressive results, as sophomore Sereana Vulaona claimed second place in the women’s long jump with a mark of 5.20 meters. In the men’s triple jump, sophomore Luis Calderon reached an official jump of 13.09 meters, which earned him second place.
On the track, sophomore Aniya Bush impressed in the 60-meter hurdles, running the second-fastest time in the preliminaries, 9.63. Bush shaved off time in the finals where she finished second overall with a 9.29 time. Joseph followed up her high jump performance with another strong showing in the 60-meter dash. After running 8.31 in the prelims, Joseph improved her time to 8.19 in the finals, securing third place. Sophomore Christina Crowley made her mark in the women’s 800 meter, finishing third with a time of 2:36.12. Junior Elsie Kaas competed in the women’s 1000 meter run, where she placed third with a 3:20.66 time. In the men’s 600 meter, senior Elijah Espinal posted a third-place finish with a time of 1:28.03.
Junior Noah Hurd put up a strong performance in the men’s 1000 meter race. Hurd’s time of 2:43.03 earned him second place. Freshman Connor Knee finished in third place with a time of 2:44.81.
Both the men’s and women’s 4x800m relay teams had impressive performances. The women’s team took first place with a time of 10:49.39. The men’s relay team finished second with a combined time of 8:46.51, highlighting the team’s depth in both individual and relay events.
The Chargers will take the road again on Saturday to compete in the Big Apple Invitational in Staten Island, New York. The events are set to begin at 4 p.m. at Ocean Breeze Park.
