Last week, the women’s rugby team hosted the Long Island University (LIU) Sharks and fell short, 97-8. Prior to the start of the match, New Haven honored seven senior players; Alyssa Cogdell, Sara Connelly, Lala Guimaraes, Montse Hernandez Pier, Ella Nenoff, Makayla Thorpe, and Adriana Vargas.
Guimaraes expressed that their dynamic is chaotic, similar to any other team, but as a senior, she has stepped up to boost confidence in underclassmen and create a positive team environment. She expressed her love for New Haven rugby and how her participation in an athletic team has played a significant role in her college experience and has prepared her for the next stage of life.
“Everything is dealt with in a team of some sort, whether it be family, whether it be coworkers and with athletics, you just learn how to work under pressure, adapt quickly and as a group achieve one goal,” said Guimaraes.
Hernandez Pier said that being a member of the team has disciplined her and taught her time management, and that she will always be grateful for what she has learned. She said that her favorite memory is engaging with new players during preseason and strengthening her relationship with teammates.
“One message I would like to leave to my teammates is never give up,” said Hernandez Pier. “I know our sport asks for a lot of things, but there is a reason why we go through those challenges, and it will only help us to become better, at the game and individually. At the end of this experience, you will never regret what you have just gone through.”
Guimaraes advised incoming student-athletes to manage their time and not forget to enjoy the ride along the way. Hernandez Pier built off this and said that no matter how many times you fall, keep persevering.
After the loss, New Haven now has an overall record of 0-5. The Chargers will be back in action on Oct. 18 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to face the American International College Yellow Jackets. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
