The men’s golf team finished first overall in Mercyhurst University’s Laker Fall Invitational with three players placing in the top ten last week.
Freshman Landon Arnold said that the team has a lot of talent and has been putting in the work every day at practice.
“We all know that what we have here is special, whether it’s our on-course abilities or the way we treat each other off the course,” said Arnold. “The most important thing is that every single guy is there for one another, we are a family. Another thing is now that we know what winning feels like, we want that feeling that much more every single time.”
New Haven was one of nine teams competing on a 6,883-yard par 72 course. Sophomore Tommaso Rossin led the Chargers and secured first place in the tournament after he finished with an overall score of 215, just one shot above the second-place competitor. Rossin scored 73 in the first round, 69 in the second round and ended the final round with a score of 73.
Following Rossin was Arnold, who secured a fifth-place finish with an overall score of 218 after rounds of 72, 73 and 73. Junior Hermann Gavilan clinched a 10th-place finish after he ended with a total score of 223. Gavilan shot 74 in the first round, 70 in the second and 79 in the last round.
Junior Jack Breutsch tied for 25th place and shot an overall score of 228 after he carded 72, 80 and 76, respectively. Close behind Breutsch, there was another new face to the Chargers, freshman Max Pawloski who tied for 27th place. Pawloski shot an overall score of 229.
In a collaborative effort, the Chargers secured the Invitational win with a final score of 873. New Haven carded 291 in the first round, 285 in the second and 297 in the third.
“I am looking forward to winning again but also growing closer to everyone on the team,” said Arnold. “We are all so unique so I can’t wait to get even closer with all of the guys.”
The New Haven Chargers will be back in action on Oct. 6 when they compete in the Saint Francis University Red Flash Invitational. The tournament will take place in Loretto, PA. and will be competed over the course of two days. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
