The lacrosse team hosted the Assumption University Greyhounds for the Northeast-10 championship quarterfinal, but fell short 14-13.
The game kicked off as junior midfielder Summer Castiglione took control of the opening draw. The first shot came from sophomore midfielder Helena Dunwoody only 49 seconds into the game but the shot was saved by the Greyhounds goalkeeper, Skylar Troyan. Shortly after, an Assumption turnover led to a ground ball pick up by senior Gianna Caprioli and then a shot by Castiglione.
Midfielder Katie Schenk scored the first goal of the game, with over ten minutes of play remaining in the first quarter. After a slew of turnovers from each team, Schenk scored her second goal of the quarter on a free-position goal with a man-up after a Greyhound penalty. Castiglione also scored a goal off an assist from Caitlin Seleny after another Assumption penalty. The Greyhounds would inch closer on a goal with 6:20 left in the quarter, and then their second with 3:01 left, before taking the lead 4-3 with 39 seconds left.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Assumption’s Margaret Loeber scored in a man-up. However, the Chargers would begin to pepper shots as they tried to gain that momentum back after a foul led to Schenk’s third goal of the game off a free-position shot. This quarter saw back and forth action, with attacker Lindsey Belmonte scoring two goals within 30 seconds to tie the game at six a piece. Three more goals by Lucy Shafer, Schenk and Caprioli put the Chargers at an advantage.
The back and forth affair would continue as the Greyhounds took the lead after a string of unanswered goals, but Schenk would score again on another man-up, free position goal to tie it at 10 with 7:35 left. The quarter ended with a score of 11-11 after Sophia Minnion scored a man-up goal with 3:13 left.
In the final quarter, the Chargers gained control by a draw win for Dunwoody, but the Greyhounds scored just four and a half minutes in. With under ten minutes remaining, New Haven’s Belmonte tied the game. In the remainder of the game, Assumption scored two more goals, cementing the playoff win.
The Chargers, however, anticipate an appearance in the regional tournament after a strong showing this season, finishing 12-5 overall and 9-1 in conference play. For more information, please visit NewHavenChargers.com.
