In a three game series, the Chargers faced off against the Adelphi University Panthers. Entering the matchup, the Chargers held an 18-12 record, while Adelphi came in just under .500 at 16-17. After splitting the doubleheader series against the Panthers, the Chargers bounced back to take the series with a hard-fought 8-5 victory.
New Haven secured the first series win with a 5-4 walk-off victory. After falling behind 4-1 in the top of the fourth, the Chargers rallied with three unearned runs in the fifth to even the score. Michael Christian delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to bring home Robert Taylor, who led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jack Wishner went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Adelphi, but the Panthers left 11 runners stranded, including three in the top of the ninth. Jay Vohra earned the win in relief for New Haven.
Adelphi dominated game two of the series with an 11-3 win over New Haven. The Panthers had six runs in the third inning, capped by a three-run homerun from Brady McCleary. Adelphi added another in the fourth and four more in the eighth, aided by a bases-clearing double from Jack Wishner, who finished with three RBIs. New Haven was held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when they pushed across three runs, including a two-run double from Evan Ettinger. Despite the late effort, the Chargers couldn’t overcome their early deficit and were limited to just one hit through the first seven innings.
New Haven clinched the series win over Adelphi with an 8-5 victory in the nightcap of their final doubleheader against the Panthers. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Chargers responded with a five-run outburst in the bottom half, capped by a two-run double from Jake Frazzetta. Adelphi answered in the fourth with a three-run homerun from Eamonn Duignan to tie it, but New Haven’s Taylor restored the lead with a solo shot in the fifth. The Chargers added two more in the seventh, aided by an Adelphi error and a wild pitch. Frazzetta finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Taylor scored three times. Adelphi threatened late but stranded runners in each of the final three innings.
After the series win over Adelphi, the Chargers have an overall record of 20-13 and 8-8 in conference play. New Haven will be back in action Tuesday to face the Mercy University Mavericks for a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Mercy Field.
