University Names Chris Palmer New Athletic Director, Bailey Gone

On Tuesday, January 16, the University of New Haven announced the hiring of Chris Palmer as the new Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Duane Bailey was named athletic director in May of 2017, but left that post during the winter intersession due to unknown reasons. The university declined multiple requests to comment on Bailey’s departure.

Palmer will have help in his new position as head women’s volleyball coach Robin Salters will be promoted to deputy director of athletics and senior women’s administrator. Salters agreed to step away from her coaching position so that she can devote her attention to assisting Palmer with the leadership and administration of the university’s entire athletic program.

Palmer is a former NFL coach with 25 years of experience under his belt. Palmer has been a part of two Super Bowl runs, including a 2008 Super Bowl win with the New York Giants. Palmer was the head coach of the university’s football program from 1986 to 1987.

While best known for his 25 years of coaching in the NFL and 15 years as a college coach, he also has athletic administration experience. He acquired this skill as the head coach and general manager of the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League.

“Chris’s experience as a football coach, manager, fundraiser, teacher, and mentor will serve our athletic program superbly,” said Walter Caffey, vice president for enrollment management. “He is a strong and effective leader with an impressive record of successes.”

Palmer worked under many of the leading names in football, such as John Mara, Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft and Al Lerner. He was also an offensive coach for  multiple NFL head coaches and has coached NFL stars such as Eli Manning, Doug Flutie, Drew Bledsoe, Tony Romo and Hershel Walker.
