On Sept. 7, MTV hosted its annual award show, the Video Music Awards (VMAs). The VMAs, first held in 1984, are dedicated to honoring the year’s biggest musical artists. From iconic performances to the celebration of artists being recognized for their achievements, the ceremony did not disappoint this year with many notable moments that left quite the buzz.
For its 41st show, the night was hosted by rap artist LL Cool J and featured two new categories: “Best Pop Artist” and “Best Country.” The competition this year was high and left many fans on the edge of their seats. One of the most significant categories of the night, Video of the Year, was won by Ariana Grande for her 26-minute short film “Brighter Days Ahead,” which featured music from her seventh studio album, “Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead.”
Lady Gaga was the biggest winner of the night with four awards in total, including the award for Artist of the Year. Gaga’s collaboration song with Bruno Mars, “Die With A Smile,” won Best Collaboration, and her hit song “Abracadabra” received awards for Best Direction and Best Art Direction. On the same night, she was set to perform at Madison Square Garden for her “Mayhem Ball” tour, so she could not stick around for the rest of the ceremony. The VMAs later broadcasted performances of “Abracadabra” and her newest single, “The Dead Dance.”
Mars and Rosé won another top category, Song of the Year (SOTY) for their song, “APT.” As a member of the popular K-pop group Blackpink, Rosé received her first nominations as a solo artist and made history as the first K-pop artist to receive the award for SOTY. She was not the only one to receive her first VMA award, as girl group Katseye also won their first moonman for the “MTV Push Performance of the Year.” Alex Warren took home his own for Best New Artist, while Mariah Carey also received her first for Best R&B.
The night was not only run by awards. Many artists took the stage at the ceremony to deliver unforgettable performances. Sabrina Carpenter, who received three awards that night, performed her song “Tears” for the first time, a song from her newest studio album, “Man’s Best Friend.” On stage, Carpenter delivered a tribute to transgender rights as she was joined by several drag queens, holding signs that read things such as “Dolls Dolls Dolls” and “In Trans We Trust.”
Singer Tate McRae performed for the first time on the VMA’s main stage. Known for her background as a dancer, McRae showcased her strong choreography s and took home her first VMA for Song of the Summer with “Just Keep Watching.”
A tribute for rock star Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away in July, was also held during the ceremony. English singer Yungblud was joined on stage by Aerosmith members Joe Perry and Steven Tyler, alongside guitarist Nuno Betterncourt to honor the life and legacy of the heavy metal icon. Together, they sang a medley of Osbourne’s hits, “Crazy Train,” “Changes” and “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”
