Megan Thee Stallion has been making waves in her role in the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.”
Since her debut on March 26, Megan wowed crowds with her performance as the first ever female portrayal of the fictional nightclub’s master of ceremonies, Harold Zidler, taking the role previously occupied by Bob the Drag Queen, who ended his run on March 22. While the show is scheduled to run until July 26, Megan will hold the role of Zidler, dropping the first name, until May 17.
“I’ve always believed in pushing myself creatively and theatre is definitely a new opportunity that I’m excited to embrace,” Megan said in a statement. “Broadway demands a different level of discipline, preparation, and storytelling, but I’m up for the challenge and can’t wait for the Hotties to see a new side of me.
Based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, “Moulin Rouge!” follows the tragic romance between an American songwriter and Parisian nightclub performer at the turn of the 20th century. The musical also features covers of modern pop songs including Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Sia’s “Chandelier.”
As a special addition for her run, the show features a curtain call medley of songs from Megan’s discography, including “WAP,” “Savage” and “Body.”
However, during her performance on March 31, Megan was rushed to the hospital in the middle of the show. Her representatives said the doctors attributed the sudden bout of illness to exhaustion, dehydration, blood pressure and low levels of metabolism.
“I’ve been pushing myself past my limits lately, running on empty, and my body finally said enough,” Megan posted on her Instagram the following day. “It honestly scared me.”
Understudy Patrick Clanton filled the role of Zidler for the rest of the performance, and Megan returned to the role on April 2, continuing her run.
After the North American leg of its tour ends, “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” will be in Toronto, Ontario from April 22 until May 10 at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre.
