As we enter the month of October – cooler weather, the smell of pumpkin spice filling the air, autumn leaves, — things can still feel a bit stressful. With midterm exams added to the usual school workload, finding a movie to watch at the end of a long day is a perfect way to relax.
But with the amount of films out there, where do you even start?
Whether from the comfort of your own bed or the reclining seat of a movie theater, here’s a movie guide to lead you through this season’s cinema.
To start, classics are a good way to settle into the fall spirit. Here are some classic films to enjoy, with a mix of autumn and Halloween vibes.
“The Addams Family” (1991) and “Addams Family Values” (1993)
We know them, and we love them, even though they are bizarre. These Addams family films from the ‘90s are a fall movie staple, especially after Netflix’s “Wednesday” second season wrapped last month, which followed the Addams’ daughter Wednesday. This is a good time to sit back and enjoy films that showcase the entire family. For people who want to dive even deeper, watch the TV series from the ‘60s that started it all. Whatever adaptation you choose, these films are perfect for a hilarious, spooky and heartwarming fall movie night.
Both films are available on a variety of different platforms such as Paramount+ and Prime Video. The show is available on Pluto TV and the Roku Channel.
“Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009)
This Wes Anderson film is something special. You could even say it’s fantastic. From the character designs to the color palettes, the film is visually appealing and its unique stop motion animation is the choice for a cozy, laid-back movie night.
Available on Disney + and Prime Video.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975)
Don’t let the name fool you. This film is not as scary as the title suggests. This cult classic musical horror comedy is perfect for people who want an unserious film, full of iconic musical numbers and satire. Celebrate the film’s 50th year and take a trip to Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s castle, what awaits is something you’ve never seen before.
Available on Hulu and Disney +.
Want something more scary? For fans of the spookier version of the month, settling down with a good horror movie is another way to bask in the feels of fall, while adding some spine-chilling horror.
“Creep” (2014)
This film’s unsettling nature comes not only from Mark Duplass’ performance as Josef, but also the overall atmosphere of the found footage style. Filled with heavy tension and uncomfortable moments, this film is as disturbing as it is enjoyable. And don’t mind Josef’s PeachFuzz mask, he just has that, no particular reason at all…
Available on Netflix.
“Final Destination Bloodlines” (2025)
The “Final Destination” series has created an iconic genre of horror films that follows the grim topic of death. As the newest film in the series, this one ties everything together and maintains that suspense of the cycle of death and people who cheat their fate. The deaths in this film are truly one of a kind. No spoilers, though. You have to watch it yourself to see.
All “Final Destination” films available on HBO Max.
Theaters are also showcasing many films, new and classic, during the month of October. The Connecticut Post Mall’s Cinemark has a great schedule of films including:
