In a tight game against the Long Island University Sharks, the Chargers fell short in overtime, 78-74.
After a close match with Chicago State University, the Chargers looked to break their losing streak but were unable to pull off a comeback. New Haven took offensive control in the first quarter with a series of layups and a dunk from guard Teaira Kelley. After a back-and-forth rally, the Chargers entered halftime with a one-point advantage over the Sharks. LIU took the lead in the third and both teams put up a strong offensive fight before a layup by guard Schuyler Coles tied the game 67-67 and sent them into overtime. The Sharks secured the win with key free-throw shots and a three-pointer from Solangelei Akridge.
Guard Jasmine McKay led the Chargers with 21 points after shooting 7-for-19 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. McKay added three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Guards Kelley and Coles each put up 13 points. Kelley finished the game with seven rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Coles shot 5-for-8 from the field, 1-for-1 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Coles also tallied four assists, three steals and two rebounds. Guard Lindsay Hogan scored 10 points and had four rebounds and three assists.
Besides New Haven’s leading scorers, five other Chargers were able to put points up on the board. Forward Aniya McDonald-Perry finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. Guard Renelle Grannum scored three points from behind the arc. Guard Katelyn Simpson and centers Merit Innocent and Shannon McCarthy each scored two points. Simpson and Innocent both had one rebound.
New Haven finished the game shooting 38.9% from the field compared to LIU’s 46.7%. The Chargers shot 5-for-18 from behind the three-point arc and 13-for-16 from the free-throw line.
As a team, the Chargers tallied 41 rebounds, 15 assists, 10 steals and two blocks. New Haven committed 26 personal fouls and 11 turnovers.
After the loss, the women’s basketball team has an overall record of 7-17 and 5-8 in conference play. The Chargers will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to face the Stonehill College Skyhawks for an NEC matchup.
