On Saturday, April 2, Fully Charged held its first ever acapella invitational in Bucknall Theater. Monsoon Dance Crew and W.R.I.T.E Poetry Club made special guest appearances as well as two groups from the University of Connecticut.
Monsoon opened the night up, followed by Conn-Men and the Rolling Tones from UConn. A spoken word performance by W.R.I.T.E. Poetry and finally, the University of New Haven’s own Fully Charged closed out the night with their acapella performance.
Fully Charged ended the invitational with four different songs; “Hollow,” “The Cave,” “No Air,” and a mash up of “Sugar, We’re Goin Down,” “Price tag,” and “This is Gospel.”
Fully Charged was founded in 2013 and is led by students. The group performs for various different events on campus including Chargers Got Talent and St. Jude’s Up Till Dawn.
Songs for events are chosen based off of a vote from a list proposed at the start of the semester. On average, it takes about two weeks of hard work to learn a new song, according to Jaimy Rippe, Treasurer elect. Fully Charged meets three times a week. Soloists are chosen by an audition and vote from the group.
Several different soloists performed from the various groups throughout the event.
Kristen Lambert, an audience member, spoke about a soloist from the Rolling Tones. “I got goose bumps when she was going all in…”
“You could really tell she was into it; the way she moved with the beat, and her facial expressions almost made me believe she was singing a song about her own life,” Lambert.
Fully Charged wanted to host an invitational to connect with other schools in the area with acapella groups. Inviting more groups is on the list of things to improve for next year.
Fully Charged President Glenn Rohrbacker said, “I think it went really well. I’m excited to make it bigger and better in the future.”
