Forbidden Planet is a 1956 science fiction film that is hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi’s of all time. Based upon Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Leslie Nielsen stars as Captain Adams of a militant starship that is sent out to investigate for survivors of a spaceship crash on an isolated planet space. Finding only Dr. Morbius survived the previous crash, Morbius is resistant to share all of his knowledge with Adams’ crew, who persists on finding out how he survived on the barren planet. The real star of Forbidden Planet is Robby the Robot, a super advanced robot that can pretty much do anything. Breaking ground on visual effects for the time, Forbidden Planet is surprisingly thoughtful and delves into psychological concepts such as the effects of the id on human behavior. Forbidden Planet is absolutely worth a watch, even if the visual effects are a bit dated by modern standards.
