Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday brought Latin culture and upbeat reggaeton to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
During the break in the face off between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, Bad Bunny took over the arena in Apple Music’s Halftime Show with several of his hits, including tracks off his Grammy winning album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.”
An on-screen message reading “El espectáculo medio tiempo del Super Tazón”–meaning “The Super Bowl Halftime Show”–marked the start of the show before Bad Bunny opened with “Tití Me Preguntó.”
Bad Bunny slowly wound his way through numerous scenes displaying different things of relevance to the Latin community. Farmers donning pavas–woven straw hats native to Puerto Rico–as they worked in a field, a piragua cart and a vibrant little house he fell through the roof of marked a few of these mini cultural scenescapes.
He took a brief moment between songs to reference his recent Grammy win with a clip of his acceptance speech playing on a small television before he handed his trophy off to a young boy in a touching moment.
Bad Bunny continued his performance with upbeat tracks like “Yo Perrero Sola” and “VOY A LLeVARTE PA PR.” After wrapping up his performance of “EoO,” the scene changed once again and now joined by a violin orchestra, he spoke directly into the camera.
“My name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio,” he said in Spanish. “And if I am here today at Super Bowl 60, it’s because I never, ever stopped believing in myself, and you should also believe in yourself. You’re worth more than you think.”
He then brought out guest stars Lady Gaga for a salsa remix of “Die With a Smile” and Ricky Martin to cover Bad Bunny’s “LO QUE LE PASÓ A HAWAii.” Even more surprise guests were hidden among the dancers such as rapper Cardi B and actor Pedro Pascal.
As the most watched Super Bowl halftime show with more than 135 million viewers, his performance brought in a lot of reactions from celebrities online.
“Oh, Benito was unbelievable,” said actor Adam Sandler to Entertainment Tonight. “Loose, happy, made everybody ecstatic. I loved it. Congrats to the Bunny. He’s a great human being.”
Before the closing of the show, Bad Bunny took a moment to shout out “God bless America!” before listing out numerous other countries as their flags were raised by dancers who followed him across the field with them.
“Seguimos aquí!” he said–a phrase that translates to “We’re still here!”–before spiking a football that read: “TOGETHER, WE ARE AMERICA.”
Concluding the show with “DtMF,” Bad Bunny walked off the turf as a large screen atop the arena read in large black letters: “THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE.”
