Women’s tennis wins first conference match of season over Assumption
The University of New Haven women’s tennis team bounced back from a two-game losing skid on Wednesday, earning their first conference win of the season. The Chargers were led by sophomore Alexa Orlando, as they took down Assumption College at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
Orlando was dominant during her match, shutting out her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 win. It was a strong showing in her first singles appearance of the year.
Graduate student Ivana Andric and senior Stephanie Gonzalez paired up to give the Chargers a doubles win. They took the match in 12 games, posting a 7-5 victory. The two lead the Chargers in doubles victories this season, with this being their third victory in five matches. Orlando and senior Lilia Rodriguez continued their success on the court together, winning their second match of the season with a 6-1 win.
In singles, sophomore Kacie Banks was victorious with a straight-set win 7-6, 6-1 and 8-6. Andric also stood out in her singles match, winning her team-leading fifth victory of the year in straight sets. She has registered at least one victory in all but one of her five matches since transferring to New Haven from New York Tech.
Sophomore Nicole Mika won her first set 6-1 and was tied 1-1 in the second set before the match went unfinished due to the overall score of the match. Gonzalez tied her match up in the second set, winning 6-4 to force a third set before it went unfinished.
The only win for Assumption came after Greyhound player Valeria Sanchez won 7-6 and 6-0 over Chargers’ senior Lilia Rodriguez.
New Haven’s win marks their first conference victory in three tries. They improved to 2-3 this year, with their other win coming against the Big East’s Providence College, the program’s first victory against a Division 1 opponent since the 2017-18 season. Meanwhile, Assumption falls to 0-4 on the season with their next match coming on against Bentley University on April 7.
The Chargers return to action on Friday with a rescheduled match against Bentley. It will now be played indoors on Simmons College campus, with the start time scheduled for 2 p.m, all scores will be available on NewHavenChargers.com.
