Last week, the Chargers extended their winning streak with a dominant 17-10 victory over the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen.
SNHU struck early in the game when Skylar Pietz scored off an assist from Katelyn Hadden. The Chargers quickly responded as Helena Dunwoody found the back of the net off a pass from Katie Schenk. The first quarter remained competitive as the teams exchanged goals. New Haven’s Gianna Caprioli and SNHU’s Rachel McLaughlin and Hadden contributed to the back-and-forth battle before the Chargers seized control. Goals from Lindsey Belmonte, Dunwoody and Schenk helped the Chargers close out the first period with a 6-3 lead.
New Haven carried that momentum into the second quarter and extended their advantage with goals from Caitlin Seleny, Caprioli, Dunwoody and Summer Castiglione. Despite a free-position goal from Hadden, SNHU struggled to slow down New Haven’s offensive attack. The Chargers capitalized on man-up opportunities as Seleny and Castiglione added to the lead. Goalkeeper Madeline Sage made key saves for SNHU, but New Haven’s offense remained relentless, and went into halftime with a 13-4 lead.
The second half opened with another man-up goal from Schenk, and Belmonte followed with a score off Schenk’s assist to put the Chargers ahead, 15-4. SNHU pushed back late in the third quarter and cut into the deficit with goals from Natalie Bosselman and Camdyn Swain which set the score to 15-6 as both teams entered the final period.
Southern New Hampshire continued its fight in the fourth quarter, as Bosselman and Hadden each found the net early and narrowed the gap to 15-8. However, New Haven responded with a critical man-down goal from Schenk. SNHU’s Sabrina Redding was able to strike the back of the net but Belmonte added an insurance goal to advance the Chargers, 17-9. Redding struck again, but SNHU’s late push wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Hadden led the Penmen with three goals and three assists, while Redding and Bosselman each added two goals. Schenk, Belmonte and Seleny paced New Haven’s offense, combining for 11 goals. Sage recorded multiple saves for SNHU, while strong defensive play and key takeaways helped the Chargers maintain control in the closing minutes.
After the win against the Penmen, the Chargers have an overall record of 5-3 and remain undefeated in conference play, 2-0. On Wednesday, New Haven will host their cross-town rivals, the Southern Connecticut State University Owls for a conference match-up. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
