What there needs to be more of in this world is people helping out their community. New Haven Farms is doing just that by holding a fundraiser to provide fresh food for local families that are at possibly risk of catching diseases that are sometimes made worse by certain foods.
On Saturday, April 14, 2012, New Haven Farms held their fundraiser from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bentara Restaurant. This was the first fundraiser for the non-profit organization. By holding this fundraiser the organization was hoping to promote health and community development with the aid of urban agriculture. The organization raised money by charging an admission fee, which included light refreshment and live music, and also by having a cash bar.
This was a great fundraising event for the entire community to get involved in to help the local community. The money is going to plant figurative seeds that will go to help the organization grow and increase the amount of fresh produce eaten by families at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The organization formed a partnership with Fair Haven Community Health Center to help local community people get smart about eating healthy and this fundraiser is only going to help expand this endeavor.
According to the director of New Haven Farms, Rebecca Kline, this organization is critical to the community because 98% of residents live on or below the poverty line. And 65% of adults and 58% of children are obese in the area. This program is available to help local residents learn to utilize their farming skills to both benefit their finances, by farming themselves, and their health by eating better. It’s good for them and their kids.
