Senior Day is usually filled with tears and memories, as it’s the last time the seniors will play here at the University of New Haven, either on this field, or in Friday’s case, on the men’s soccer team at all.
Coming into the game with one win, the team didn’t have the season it hoped to have, but if there was one game that they absolutely wanted to win this season, it was senior day.
With the game tied 1-1 and seconds running down, junior midfielder Eric Robertson, put one in the back of the net, with just six seconds to play giving the Chargers a 2-1 victory to close out the season. The Chargers didn’t have the season they were expecting, finishing 2-14-1 overall and 2-11 in conference play, but they had their biggest win of the season Thursday.
The entire game was close throughout. Bentley got on the board first with a goal at 38 minutes, making the score 1-0, but just six short minutes later the Chargers would be set up to tie the game.
The Chargers were on a breakaway when Bentley goalkeeper, Jack Blatchford, came out to challenge for the ball and was called for a foul. Sophomore Oskar Sewerin took full advantage of this opportunity as he lined up for the free kick just outside the 18-yard box. He knocked it right into the top left hand corner for a goal, tying the game with about a minute left in the half.
There was only one goal by Robertson in the second half, but that goal would have meant nothing without sophomore James Pyatsky. With a tied match 83 minutes into the game, Bentley had a penalty kick that could have taken the lead. On the kick, Pyatsky made the save, followed by another save on a shot off of a rebound of the first save, keeping the game tied at one.
The game winning shot came off a Charger steal off the goalkeeper. Pyatsky earned his first collegiate victory in which he had five saves.
