Recently there’s been a lot of rumors going around cyberspace that MTV’s phenomenon Jersey Shore has officially run its’ course. The fifth season of the super-hit ended in mid-March and left many questions about whether it would return. On March 19, however, the Shore was renewed for another season of summertime craziness.
Since its premier in late 2009, Jersey Shore has been one of MTV’s most successful shows ever. The eight member cast has spent three summers in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, as well as early 2010 in Miami and early 2011 in Florence, Italy. The insane popularity of the show is due largely to the drama and the fights between the housemates, who are filmed 24/7 and allowed no access to technology while filming. A season takes around a month to film. According to Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi, the show’s trademark fighting is a result of the lack of privacy the cast members are subjected to.
Many fans were concerned, however, by no news of a Shore renewal with the fifth season winding down. MTV also announced in 2011 that spinoffs would be given to cast members Polizzi, Jennifer ‘J WOWW’ Farley, and Paul ‘DJ Pauly D’ Delvecchio. Polizzi and Farley will have their own show, and The Pauly D Project, which MTV is actively advertising, follows the DJ around on tour. No official start date was given for Farley and Polizzi’s show, but it was set to begin filming at the conclusion of Jersey Shore. Most, if not all, of Delvecchio’s filming is complete, however. Shore fans were wondering if MTV’s silence meant that end had come for the three year-old show.
Jersey Shore has made the region of New Jersey where it is based a major tourist attraction. Also, the show has introduced many phrases into modern pop-culture language. America has the Shore to thank for GTL (Gym, Tanning, Laundry), Grenades and Landmines (derogatory terms for women), and Pauly D’s ever popular “Yeah Buddy!” and “Cabs are Here!” to name just a few.
It was also announced officially by Polizzi in an interview that aired during the fifth season finale that she is pregnant and engaged. This added to the rumors that the Shore was a thing of the past; much of the show is centered on partying and drinking, and Polizzi, who is 24, has been arrested in the past for doing those things excessively.
Filming of season six is set to begin this summer in New Jersey. Snooki will be well into her third trimester by the time filming starts. Many internet critics have poked fun at Snooki-2012 is the year the Mayan calendar says the world will end, and even though the baby will come before December, many are drawing parallels.
It will definitely be interesting to see how the cast behaves with their biggest partier not partying. It’s worth watching the show to see what antics the eight crazy housemates come up with.
