Last week, the Assumption University Greyhounds beat the Chargers field hockey team, 5-0 in West Haven.
In the first quarter, the Greyhounds came off strong offensively with four shot attempts in the first four minutes. They were unable to reach the back of the cage, as New Haven’s goalkeeper Cara Lambert saved two shots. Forward Erin Smith took the Chargers’ first attempted shot of the game but couldn’t make it past Assumption’s goalkeeper Paige Gillette.
Shortly after, midfielder Johannah Lee made an attempt, but missed wide. New Haven kept the offense rolling with a shot from forward Abby Nixon followed by another attempt from Lee. Nearing the end of the first quarter, Assumption’s Julie Carbone scored the first goal of the game off an assist from Daisy Stone.
The second quarter started with a series of fouls from New Haven and Assumption. Forward Emma Beaujounan was the only Charger to take an attempted shot in the quarter. The Greyhounds’ Carbone and Nova Rijks each added a shot for Assumption but could not make it past the Chargers’ defense.
At the half, New Haven had a total of five shot attempts countered by Assumption with 10 shots of their own. The Chargers tallied eight fouls while the Greyhounds had 23.
In the third quarter, the Chargers struggled offensively with no attempts at goal. Assumption’s Rijks took two shots before the Greyhounds’ Taylor Tory scored the second goal of the game off an assist from Caroline McSweeney. Rijks made another attempt that went wide followed by Stone who couldn’t make it past Lambert. With seconds remaining, Assumption’s Chloe Kaeller scored her first goal of the season, and boosted the score to 3-0.
New Haven midfielder Sophia Ruh started the fourth quarter with the first goal attempt, but the shot missed wide. Assumption’s Marta Brzoska scored back-to-back goals, making her first goal of the season from Carbone’s assist followed by a header goal with two minutes remaining in the game. Defender Eliza Caven took the final attempt for the Chargers, but was unsuccessful.
New Haven finished the game with seven shot attempts, with only two at goal. Assumption had 18 attempts, with 11 at goal. After 90 minutes of play, Lambert had six saves while Gillette had two. The Chargers tallied 23 fouls while the Greyhounds had a striking 43.
After the loss to Assumption, the Chargers faced the American International College (AIC) Yellow Jackets on Saturday. This was the second face off of the season for the Chargers and the Yellow Jackets, this time taking place in Springfield, Massachusetts. New Haven won 5-1.
In the first quarter, New Haven began with a series of fouls followed by an attempt from midfielder Olivia Chase but she was unable to make it past AIC’s goalkeeper Frederique den Hartog. Shortly after, midfielder Paige Garrett scored a penalty kick goal which put the Chargers at a 1-0 advantage. Ruh and Smith both added shots of their own before the end of the first period. The Yellow Jackets started the second quarter strong offensively with an early goal made by Mia Wood after an assist from Maddie Darling. The Chargers countered with four attempts but couldn’t reach the back of the cage. New Haven and AIC stood 1-1 as they entered halftime.
In the third quarter, AIC’s Darling took the first and only attempt for the Yellow Jackets but couldn’t make it past New Haven’s goalkeeper Cara Lambert. Forwards Kat Trammel and Nixon both took an attempt but den Hartog saved both at goal. Nearing the end of the quarter, the Chargers took the lead and didn’t look back for the remainder of the game after a penalty kick goal from Lee. Midfielders Carina Ramirez and Trammel opened the fourth period with attempts at goal but couldn’t get past AIC’s defense. Nearly two minutes in, Ruh scored the third goal of the game off an assist from Trammel. The Chargers kept the momentum high as minutes later forward Sydney Moda scored after an assist from Garrett. AIC and New Haven exchanged a series of fouls before Smith scored the final goal of the game off an assist from Lee.
The Chargers finished with 20 shot attempts, with 16 at goal. After 90 minutes of play Lambert had one save. The Yellow Jackets tallied 26 fouls while the Chargers had 24.
After the Chargers loss and win, New Haven has an overall record of 4-6 overall and 3-2 in NE10 play. The Chargers will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to face their cross town rivals the Southern Connecticut State Owls. The game will be held at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium.
