The New Haven Chargers defeated the Adelphi University Panthers in their final home game of the regular season, 2-1, on Oct. 29.
This was the Chargers’ Pride recognition game. In the beginning of the first quarter, New Haven and Adelphi exchanged a series of fouls. Forward Erin Smith scored the first goal of the game after she took a shot from the opposite side. That gave the Chargers a 1-0 advantage. The Chargers and Panthers each tallied more fouls before Adelphi’s Amanda Lee took the Panthers’ first shot at goal, which was stopped by New Haven’s goalkeeper Cara Lambert.
The Panthers’ Ali Nagy and Lana Mignon de Wet both made shot attempts but couldn’t reach the back of the cage. Forward Kat Trammel took an attempt for New Haven but was blocked by Adelphi’s goalkeeper Allison Gregory. Mignon de Wet took another attempt but defender Kelli Jacobson saved the shot and the quarter ended 1-0.
In the second quarter, Jacobson took the first and only shot attempt for the Chargers, but was blocked by Adelphi’s defense. The Panthers’ Nagy made another attempt at goal but it was saved by Lambert. New Haven and Adelphi exchanged a series of fouls before the Panthers had three shot attempts by Lee followed by Sydney Rossacci, whose shot went wide. After a scoreless period, the Chargers remained 1-0 over the Panthers.
In the third quarter, the Chargers had five fouls before Smith took an attempt that missed. Midfielder Paige Garrett was right behind with a shot of her own, but it was saved by Gregory at goal. Adelphi’s Kelly Johnson, Jillian Riche and Lee had a trio of shot attempts, but all were saved by Lambert. Smith found a breakthrough for the Chargers after a takeaway at midfield and took a shot from the top of the arc, which put New Haven up 2-0 to end the third quarter.
Adelphi’s Rossacci opened the final quarter with an attempt at goal but it was saved by Lambert. Lee and Mignon de Wet each added additional attempts but the shots could not find the back of the cage. Defender Kristen MacAuley made the only attempt for the Chargers, but the shot missed wide. With under two minutes remaining, Adelphi’s Mignon de Wet was able to reach the back of the cage and score the Panther’s only goal of the game. The Chargers ended the game with a 2-1 victory over Adelphi.
New Haven finished the game with seven shot attempts and four on goal, to Adelphi’s 18 attempts, with 10 on goal. After 60 minutes of play, Lambert had eight saves while Gregory had two. The Chargers tallied 43 fouls while the Panthers collected 33 of their own.
The Chargers took on Molloy University on Saturday to end their regular season, winning 1-0. New Haven stands 8-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play at the end of the regular season.
