SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team snapped a four-game skid with a 69-56 victory over Le Moyne College
Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Chargers improved to 14-9 overall and 10-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins fell to 11-12 overall and 7-12 in the NE-10 with the loss.
Le Moyne quickly jumped out to an early 7-0 lead over the first three minutes on Saturday. At the end of a four minutes stretch, Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) put UNH on the board with a three-pointer. New Haven continued the run with seven straight points to take a 10-7 lead at the 12:02 mark. Another two three-pointers and consistant points throughout the first half allowed the Chargers to maintain the lead for the remainder of the first half. Le Moyne scored the final four points of the first half and cut the Chargers’ lead to three points at halftime, 26-23.
In the first three minutes of the second half, Le Moyne evened the score at 29-29 after a 6-0 run. The Chargers answered with their own 6-0 run to take the lead back at the 15-minute mark. New Haven held on to the lead over the next five minutes and then Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) hit back-to-back three-pointers to put UNH ahead by seven, 46-39, at the 9:20 mark. Three minutes later, Williams connected from downtown to give the Chargers their first double digit lead of the game, 51-40. In the final five minutes, New Haven improved its lead to as many as 16 points and kept the lead out of reach in the final two minutes at the free throw line. Exum hit a pair from the charity stripe with 50 seconds left to bring the score to 69-56.
New Haven shot 46-percent from the floor and out-shot the Dolphins who connected on only 37-percent of their shots. The Chargers also controlled the boards with a 39-27 advantage.
Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Chargers with 19 points on 4-of-11 from three-point territory. Jeremy Williams (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) scored 16 points and Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) netted 12 in the win. Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
