This weekend, the Chargers baseball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for their first spring training trip. New Haven faced three teams in four games and won two of the four. The Chargers started their weekend with a double header on Friday against the Chestnut Hill College Griffins, in which they split.
In game one against Chestnut Hill, the Griffins put up the first run off an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The Chargers responded with one run in both the second and third innings, followed by a big scoring sixth inning where New Haven put up five more runs to make the score 7-1. The Griffins attempted a comeback, adding three runs in the seventh and one run in the eight, but fell short with only five total runs scored. The Chargers solidified the win in the top of the ninth with an RBI sac fly from outfielder Nick Ungania to finalize the score at 8-5. Third baseman Joey Frazzetta led the Chargers offensively with a double and two RBIs, along with RBIs from Rob Taylor, Tyler Wells, Casey Cerruto and Ungania. Other Chargers that joined Frazzetta with doubles of their own included Cerruto and first baseman Matt McIntire. Starting pitcher Liam Carroll took the win on the mound for the Chargers and only gave up three hits over six innings of work.
New Haven took the loss against Chestnut Hill in game two of the double-header, only scoring one run in the first inning of the game. The RBI was accredited to Taylor, who hit a sacrifice fly to bring in outfielder Shaun Callahan. Frazzetta added the only hit of the game for the Chargers, adding another double to his stats for the day. Starting pitcher Randy Ramnarace took the loss for New Haven, going 4.1 innings and allowing six hits.
On day two of their weekend trip, the Chargers dominated the Wilmington University Wildcats, 8-2. New Haven put the first run on the board in the bottom of the first with a sac fly from outfielder Cole Maucere that brought in Callahan. Wilmington answered back in the top of the third and tied the game 1-1. The tie didn’t last long after a two-run homer from Wells in the bottom of the third that put the Chargers up 3-1. Innings four and five went scoreless for both teams, until the Wildcats scored on an error in the top of the sixth. New Haven stepped up in the final innings of the game, putting up three in the seventh and two in the eighth to end the game with a dominant score of 8-2. Cerruto led the team with a double and three RBIs, joined by McIntire who added a double of his own. Starting pitcher Mike Gatti took the win for New Haven, giving up two runs and four hits over six innings. Timothy Lewis closed the game on the mound, not giving up any hits or runs to the Wildcats over 2.1 innings.
The Chargers played game four on Sunday against the Felician University Falcons. It was a close game for New Haven, losing by just two runs in a 3-1 game. After the four games this weekend, the Chargers now have an overall record of 2-2. Their next game will take place on Feb. 28 against the Bloomfield College Bears at Frank Viera Field.
