Baseball for The University of New Haven has had great success in the past, especially last year, winning the Northeast-10 championship on their home turf. They finished 34-16 last year and earned the third seed in the NCAA East Regional Tournament.
The Chargers will open the season at Mercy College on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. The Chargers won’t play at home until March 8, when they open up the 2014 season at Frank Vieira against Queens College in a double header starting at 12 p.m.
The Chargers will start conference play on March 22 against Assumption, also starting at 12 p.m., and will begin an eight-game home stand, before taking to the road to vs. there heated rival Southern Connecticut. The Chargers will wrap up the season at Adelphi on May 3, at 1 p.m.
The Chargers have eight freshman including two pitchers, Taylor Hughes (Nantucket, Mass.) and Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) to really add some youth to a team with the talent to win.
Senior Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn.), juniors Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J.), Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa.) and Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine) along with sophomore Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y.) are all starting position players that are returning for the Chargers, while seniors Pat Simone (Branford, Conn.) and John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y.), and junior Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine) look to take the ball on the mound again for the Chargers.
Coach Chris Celano is coming back for his fourth season as baseball coach where he’s accumulated a 59-35-1 recorded. Mike Mac Millan and Tim Comiskey will join him on the Chargers’ staff this season, both for the first time.
