SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven baseball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional game, 1-2, at
Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 15-11-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the NE-10 Southwest Division. The Dolphins improved to 25-8-1 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10 Southwest Division with the win.
The two teams went scoreless through the first four innings Saturday. UNH stranded five runners on base in the first four innings, including three in the top of the first inning. Le Moyne left three runners on base in the first four innings. Brendan O’Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) opened the top of the fifth inning with a single up the middle. Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) followed with a single through the left side to put O’Reilly in scoring position. After one out, Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ) reached on an error by the shortstop and O’Reilly scored from second base to put UNH ahead 1-0. The Chargers once again loaded the bases after Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) drew a walk, but a double play stalled the rally and sent the game to the bottom of the fifth.
Le Moyne used two hits and two UNH errors in the bottom of the fifth to produce the game’s only other runs. Two of the first three batters in the fifth inning grounded out, while one reached on a single. A double down the left field line and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch gave the Dolphins a 2-1 lead.
New Haven left one runner on base in each of the final four innings and could not find the equalizing run.
On the mound, John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) pitched the first six 2/3 innings for New Haven. He suffered the loss after striking out four batters, allowing six hits and giving up one earned run. Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Eric Peck (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) combined for one 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
Clout and Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) were the only Chargers to record multiple hits in the game. Clout went 2-for-3 at the dish and Romanelli went 2-for-4. Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) and O’Reilly recorded New Haven’s only other hits in the game.
