SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The University of New Haven baseball team dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional
games at nationally ranked No. 14 Le Moyne College on Saturday. The Chargers suffered a 2-4 loss in game one and then dropped the second game 0-6. UNH fell to 15-13-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the NE-10 Southwest Division, while the Dolphins improved to 27-8-1 overall and 7-2 in the division.
Game One
The Dolphins opened scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a one-RBI groundout. New Haven answered when freshman Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) hit his second homerun of the season in the top of the second inning. He also drove in Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and gave the Chargers a 2-1 lead. Le Moyne evened the score in the bottom of the second with a one-out RBI-single to left center, evening the score at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Dolphins hit a solo homerun over the left field fence. The insurance ran by Le Moyne also came off a homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a two-run victory.
UNH stranded seven runners on base in the loss, including one in scoring position.
New Haven starter Mike Aquilino (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) went seven full innings and suffered the loss. He struck out two, walked two and gave up six hits. Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) threw one inning in relief to close the game for UNH.
Game Two
In the nightcap, Le Moyne scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and immediately took the lead. The Dolphins used three hits, including a two-RBI homerun to center field to take the quick lead.
In the third inning, Le Moyne hit another two-RBI homerun to take a 5-0 lead. The Chargers then put two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning, but could not bring in a run.
The Dolphins scored the only other run of the game with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. New Haven’s next opportunity came in the final inning with a lead-off single by Ryan Brockett (Guilford, Conn./Guilford ). He eventually reached third base, but the Dolphins recorded the final out and completed the sweep.
Buckley and David Wirkus (Orange, Conn./Fairfield Prep / St. Anselm College) each recorded two hits in the game, while Brockett added one. Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) suffered the loss on the mound, while four other pitchers also saw at least one inning in the game.
