Let’s talk about housing…or actually, let’s not. While I think the housing thing is a HUGE concern on this campus, and something that’s incredibly important, I’m sick of hearing about it.
So I’m taking a break. Flip to another page of the paper to hear about it!
But…I guess what I want to talk about is perfectly tied to the housing issue. It’s also tied to that nauseating facebook group “You Know You Go to UNH When.” I want to talk about the people on this campus who are the real “problems”. I’m talking about THAT person, and any of you who have spent any real time at this school know exactly who I’m talking about.
I’m talking about the freshman who comments on “You Know You Go to UNH When” about how much UNH sucks when they’ve only been here for two months. When that junior, who goes to every school event possible in order to win prizes or have a good time, then talks about how much the “University of No Hope” does nothing for them after one misstep. For the people who leave Bartels complain about it really being “Barftels” just because they ate three greasy cheeseburgers when they should have only eaten two. I’m talking about every person who complains about this school merely because they like to hear themselves talk.
Frankly…I can’t take it anymore. As a senior, I have a TON of pride for UNH. This has been my home away from home for four years. My roommates, classmates, and office companions are the closest friends I have ever made. Unlike a lot of my friends back home, I have professors who know me by name and come to talk to us when we’re just hanging out. The Dean of Students comes into our office and addresses us as adults, not children. On Friday nights, instead of drinking until I can’t stand up straight, I can go to a comedian, or hypnotist, or to an off campus trip. And oh yeah, although it isn’t Michelin star quality, the food is available almost 24 hours a day. I’m going to graduate this May with a great GPA, two fantastic degrees, endless opportunities in the “real” world, and thousands of memories that I’ll keep forever. I love UNH: regardless of construction, housing changes, or when “after an hour, your clothes are still wet”, to quote an annoyed student.
To all of you who decide that complaining the way you complain will ever actually get you anything: please, please grow up. Making ridiculous acronyms about UNH to make yourself feel better? Really, that does nothing. Think Bartels food sucks? Calling it Barftels will do nothing, except maybe getting seniors to laugh at you. Oh and think there is nothing to do on campus? Instead of moping around and writing about it on Facebook, get out of the dorm, go visit the SCOPE office, and actually DO something. Take a trip, go downtown, see an event on campus…but don’t complain that there is nothing to do on campus. Oh yeah, and those administrators you constantly plug your two cents about? Yeah have you ever talked to any of them? Cause chances are, you would then know they are some of the most student-driven, caring people on this entire campus.
Now, I don’t think every person is like this. In fact, the people who complain with substantiated, fact based comments actually really impress me. Kudos to you to getting out there and getting your voice heard! Thank you for using Chargervoice, The Charger Bulletin, and USGA meetings! Thank you for attending the housing forum and actually being mature! For the rest of you, not everything will go your way. Sometimes, there are bumps in the road. Sometimes, life isn’t the way we choose it to be. But you chose UNH for some reason: whether it was major programs, price, proximity to your home, or some other reason. If you hate it that badly…the door is waiting for you. Those of us who have come to call UNH home and truly love it here will not miss you in the slightest.
