Disney’s response to Comic Con has long been D23, a media convention for the corporate empire that rules the world. After Marvel skipped Comic Con this past year, for the first time in ages, there has been a lot of speculation in the media world that D23 will be a huge outlet for Marvel to announce news regarding upcoming film properties.
Well, as speculated, D23 turned out to be an outlet for many films to get their spotlight. While pictures and trailers were not released to the public, the information was.
For Disney’s Marvel branch, pictures of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in the upcoming film were shown to glowing reviews. Doctor Strange comes out to theaters in November 2016.
On the Star Wars side of Disney, it was announced that Colin Trevorrow, director of Jurassic World, will be directing Star Wars: Episode IX.
From a studio’s perspective, it makes sense, as Trevorrow just reinvigorated a dead franchise with a billion dollar plus movie.
From a quality perspective, hopefully Trevorrow will not succumb to campiness and forced “nostalgia” that distracts from the story.
In other news, the first picture of Michael Fassbender from the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film was released. Based off the popular video game series, Assassin’s Creed will tell the tale of Callum Lynch, an original character not based off of the game. However, like in the games, Callum will use a machine called the animus to relive his ancestors’ memories particularly that of his ancestors in 1500’s Spain.
Assassin’s Creed comes out December 21, 2016. Michael Fassbender’s character bears the iconic hidden blade, and his assassin hood is very evocative of that from the game.
