Memorial Ceremony and Fundraising Event in Honor of Jessica Santos
What: The University of New Haven (UNH) Victimology Club will hold a memorial ceremony followed by a Sports Showdown fundraising event to benefit the Jessica N. Santos Memorial Scholarship Fund. UNH Associate Professor of Fire Sciences and University Chaplain Martin O’Connor will preside over the ceremony, and Jessica’s mother, Gisela Marin, will speak regarding Jessica’s life and legacy.
After the ceremony, a Sports Showdown will feature ultimate Frisbee and flag football between teams of UNH students and faculty.
When: Apr. 25, 1–7 p.m.
Where: The ceremony will be held at Marvin K. Peterson Library, followed by a Sports Showdown at Arcadio “Kayo” Rodriguez, Jr. Field.
Details: Santos, a Tarrytown, New York resident, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Yonkers on Aug. 27, 2006, a day before she began her sophomore year at UNH. The fund named in her memory aids students pursuing a degree in criminal justice or forensic science.
Pre-registration for the Sports Showdown begins on April 19, with walk-up registration at the event. The cost is $5 per team member, with teams ranging form six to eight players. UNH Undergraduate Student Government Association-recognized clubs or organizations may register a team of eight for $30.
