ORANGE, Conn. – Sometimes the difference between business success and business failure is resiliency.
When Hurricane Sandy blew in, resiliency is what kept businesses focused even when the power was out, the sales floor was covered in mud and there was a tree blocking the driveway.
A workshop to help business owners develop greater resiliency will be presented by the University of New Haven Center for Family Business (CFB) on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Grassy Hill Country Club, 441 Clark Lane, in Orange.
The workshop is presented by Dramaworks InterActive, of North Hampton, Massachusetts. Working under the direction of Erik Muten, a clinical psychologist and organizational consultant, DRAMAWORKS Interactive, uses interactive theatre as a way to enhance the learning experience. The group will explore how people can shift their mindsets and behaviors for a more positive outcome when facing major challenges such as Hurricane Sandy.
One goal of the course, says Paul Sessions, director of the CFB, is to help business owners increase resiliency and adjust to obstacles such as changing economic trends, demographic and market changes and technical advancements.
“Resilience is really how fast the individual or organization springs back from exceptional external stressors,” Sessions says. “Resilience is the experience of being confronted by circumstance, and then acting not as a victim, but as a navigator, accepting the reality of the new situation, and coming up with creative solutions to challenges.”
The Center for Family Business at the University of New Haven is made up of family businesses from throughout the State of Connecticut. The center offers programs and services designed to address issues unique to family enterprises.
Reservations for the program are required. Non-member family businesses may attend for $75 per person, or $200 for three people from the same business.
