The 2021 Golden Globes Nominations Have Been Announced

On Wednesday morning, the 2021 Golden Globes nominations were virtually announced for the first time in their history in order to follow the safety measures set during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Golden Globes experienced another change as the awards typically take place in January. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) decided to push the ceremony back to February, citing concerns surrounding pandemic safety.

Streaming services have been dominating the Golden Globes for the past few years, but according to the New York Times, this year, the array of platforms have hit their stride in terms of content distribution.

Netflix provided a home for George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Netflix also did increasingly well in the television categories with nominations for shows such as “The Crown” and “Ozark,” both recognized in the Best Drama Series.

“Schitt’s Creek” and “Ted Lasso” were nominated in their respective category of Best Comedy Series “The Undoing” and “The Queen’s Gambit” are up for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

Two previously-seen Broadway movie musicals made the list. “Hamilton” and “The Prom” will be facing off alongside “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Music” and “Palm Springs.”

In addition to the nominations, there were also a substantial amount of snubs, shows and movies that the public felt were ignored by the HFPA for not being considered for nomination. Some of these include comedy-drama shows such as “I May Destroy You” and “P-Valley,” as well as actress Zendaya for the newly released “Malcolm and Marie,” and the Regina King-directed feature film “One Night in Miami.”

Former Saturday Night Live stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be hosting the award ceremony, which will virtually broadcast on NBC starting at 8 p.m. ET on Feb. 28.

The full list of nominations is available on the official Golden Globes website.
