The second annual Derby Days was held by Sigma Chiduring the week of April 1 through April 5, 2013, ending with their SigGlow event in the German Club.
Derby Days was founded in 1934 by the Sigma Chi Fraternity. It is the largest fundraiser they facilitate, and chapters across the country have raised a total of $2 million since it began. A week-long fundraising event, it places teams against each other in several competitions.
The teams earn points throughout the week for participation and generosity. The team with the most points at the end of the week is crowned Derby Days Champion.
This year, a total of $3,952.53 was raised to benefit the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Competitions were held each night. Monday included banner making in Bartels, which the teams sported throughout the week. Tuesday was Fear Factor in the German Club where participants raced the clock to avoid consuming a mystery drink. Wednesday was a talent show with each team creating two dance routines. Thursday was the Derby Check List scavenger hunt on the UNH Campus to find items that included a ukulele and a purple car. Friday night was an updated version of tailgating that involved wearing food and not just eating it.
During the days of Tuesday through Friday, the brothers chose to host mini competitions for a chance to gain extra points. On Tuesday, teams attempted to secure the American flag-decorated hats worn by brothers across campus. It was an exciting event to watch as teams chased brothers through school buildings and in the quads. Wednesday included the event called Derby Dollars, and Thursday had participants finding brothers to sign their shirts. Friday was Derby Dare at North Campus.
Sig Glow was held Saturday at 8 p.m. in the German Club, and during the event winners were announced. Team Down and Derby included the sisters of Phi Sigma Sigma, who won the overall Derby Days Champion title with 524 points and $1,600 raised.
Congratulations to the winners and to Sigma Chi on another year of successful Derby Days.
