Gabby Nowicki always wanted an excuse to throw a pie in her roommate’s face; she never had a good enough excuse to do so until Friday, Sept. 26 at Phi Sigma Sigma’s Pie a Phi event.
The event, which is Phi Sigma Sigma’s newest fundraiser, was open to all University of New Haven students as a fun way for the sorority to become more interactive with the campus while raising money.
The sorority raised $168.72 total. Over $90 was raised throughout the week leading up to the event.
Throughout the week, tables were set up in Bartels Hall; donation buckets with each volunteer’s photo were set up and the five girls who had the most money in their tub were to be pied at the event.
This friendly competition prompted girls to raise more money than they would have originally.
“I think that making it a competition was a good idea because I went around asking people to donate to my tub,” said Kayla Katt. “I wanted to raise money not only to win, but also to raise as much money as I could for my organization.”
Pie a Phi was held in the Bixler-Botwinik Quad from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Fri. Sept 26. WNHU played music, and lawn games were set up for anyone to enjoy. Fifteen sisters volunteered to be pied in the face. Of those fifteen, the five that had the most money in their tub were pied during the event.
However, losing the competition didn’t necessarily save sisters from getting pied—during the event, anyone could pay two dollars to pie any sister he or she wanted.
“We were looking to do a fundraising event in September, before our annual Midnight Sweets and Treats event,” said Phi Sigma Sigma’s Fundraising Chair Paula Aulestia. “Pie a Phi is a cute, fun idea and everyone on campus can get involved and interact with the sisters.”
Senior Nikki Langston said she was really pleased with the amount of campus involvement the event received during the week. “We got a lot of support, raising almost $90 just from the tables in Bartels.”
Melina Singer, a new member of Phi Sigma Sigma, said she was excited to be a part of an organization that holds events like this. “It was a fun event, and good for fundraising,” she said.
Aulestia said she was very pleased with the outcome of the event, and plans on making it annual.
