On Sept. 8, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the Bixler-Botwinik Quad, the Pan Hellenic sororities of the University of New Haven Greek life welcomed 27 women into the Greek community.
After a long week of recruitment Chi Kappa Rho, Phi Sigma Sigma, and Delta Phi Epsilon were excited to open their arms to the new bid classes. Chi Kappa Rho welcomes a bid class of seven women, Phi Sigma Sigma welcomes a bid class of 10 women, and Delta Phi Epsilon welcomes a class of 10 women. Each organization gathered with gifts, cake, and spirit to cheer on the girls as they ran into the Quad meeting their respective sororities.A welcoming crew of UNH Fraternities, athletic teams, and Greek life supporters lined the entrance of the Quad as they shared in support of the girls and sororities this afternoon.
Recruitment at the university was run differently this semester. As part of a developing Greek community on the campus, the Inter Fraternity Sorority Council (IFSC) along with Shelissa Newball, Assistant Director of Student Activities, and the Alpha Class of Rho Gamma’s organized weeklong events to ensure that interested students would find a sorority that was perfect for each of them.
Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1 all three sororities participated in a round robin of an informational night and social night, respectively. This gave interested students the opportunity to see each sorority before beginning the week of separate recruitment events. Monday through Saturday consisted of separate events hosted by each sorority with their own unique themes.
Another new addition to Greek recruitment is the Rho Gamma’s. The 10 sorority members who participated put their letters away for two weeks to ensure that each of the women who attended recruitment events would find the right home in a sorority. Liz Reiger, of DPhiE, said her favorite part of her experience was, “being able to unite and help other organizations with finding great fits.”
Kara Kolbeck, also of DPhiE, shared that her most rewarding experience was creating long lasting bonds with the Rho Gammas throughout the past two weeks.
Congratulations to all the girls who accepted their bids on Sunday! There will be a Cultural Greek Panel hosted on Sept. 10, 2013 from 7-9:15 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge. Fraternity Recruitment will begin on Sept. 12, 2013 at 9 p.m. in Kaplan Hall
