Kobe Bryant, his Daughter, and Seven Others Killed in Helicopter Crash

Retired NBA star Kobe Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash early Sunday near Calabasas, Calif.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, when authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered a bushfire on the hillside of the crash.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed there were no survivors in the crash deaths in a press conference.

Among the dead were Orange Coast College head basketball coach John Altobelli and his family. Payton Chester, a 13-year-old basketball player, and her mother, Sarah, along with coach Christina Mauser.

According to the New York Times, the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration said it sent a team to investigate the crash later on Sunday.

Josh Rubenstein, spokesman for the Los Angeles police department said in the press conference, “The weather conditions did not meet our minimum standards for flying.”

The department’s Air Support Division was grounded from Sunday morning into the afternoon because of foggy conditions that blanketed the area.
