It’s that time of year again, when green leaves are morphing to various fabulous, vibrant hues of red and gold. It is the signal to college students everywhere (well, in New England anyway) that it is now time to get started on that research paper! There are now so many different types of information available to a UNH student. Are you going to look for books? What about e-books? How about articles? Should the articles be peer-reviewed, or can they come from any journal, magazine, or newspaper? What about websites and being able to determine if they are suitable for academic research? Getting started on research can be a daunting task; but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming if you use the LibGuides available from the UNH library website.
A LibGuide is an easy-to-use guide that directs users to specific resources available in many of the academic areas studied by students here at UNH. Simply select the LibGuide for the subject in which you need to find information at http://libguides.newhaven.edu. The guide will direct you to databases, websites, and instructions on locating books, e-books and journals. There are even video tutorials. In addition to subject guides, there are guides to various citations styles, a general “introduction to research guide,” and much more. There are currently 64 LibGuides in all, with more to come.
A great feature of LibGuides is the ability to tailor a guide to a specific class. This is especially relevant if the class has a research paper requirement. We (the librarians at the Marvin K. Peterson Library) would love to hear from faculty interested in working with us to customize guides for specific courses. These guides can then easily be linked to class blackboard sites to ensure that assistance is available to the student whenever they need it! For an in-depth example, view the current E105 guide.
LibGuide can be accessed by going to libguides.newhaven.edu or from the Library homepage by selecting “Guides” from the list on the left hand side of the page. Student and faculty comments and suggestions are always welcome! Each guide has the comment feature enabled. Let us know how we can help you. Feel free to suggest a LibGuide if you don’t see one for the subject area that you need. We are here to help you be successful with your research.
