Man do we have some great talent on campus, and the first Beanhouse of the year proved that. On Tuesday, September 6, students came out and showed their amazing singing and guitar playing talent to others that showed up to listen at the first Beanhouse brought to you by SCOPE’s Special Events Committee.
The first two girls that sang were Ellen Murphy and April Dawn. They were great, singing their versions of “Welcome to Burlesque,” from the movie Burlesque, and “Baby Got Back.” These girls did their songs without any back up music and did an amazing job.
There was a slow period after the first two performers, so many of the audience members convinced James Zap to get up on stage. Even though he was forced to perform, he still did a fantastic job. He sang songs that we all know love, and some songs he only knew parts of. Zap ended his performance with his infamous song about UNH, and the crowd loved it, as they do every time. He made people laugh and smile.
After MEISA let out of their weekly meeting, performers and audience members came by the dozens. A lot of the songs that were performed were original songs written by the singer themselves. Kevin O’Brien, Matt Pignatore, and Eric Neilson all performed songs that they wrote themselves. All the songs were lovely and you could tell that some of the them were from the heart and had personal touches. Not only did they write and sing their own songs, but they also played the guitar and boy were they good. I just have to say that anyone that thinks they are good on Guitar Hero has nothing on these gentlemen. They were amazing and showed talent both in their voices and on the guitar.
The last couple of performers showed their unique talents. Catalina Gonzalez not only had an amazing voice but played a different instrument than the rest of the performers. Gonzalez brought her ukulele with her and performed a popular radio song and an original. And the last performer of the night was Diana Akelin. She had James Zap join her on stage to play guitar. They were a wonderful pair and a great performance to end the night.
It was a great first Beanhouse; everybody, both performers and audience members, enjoyed themselves. So hopefully these performers and more will come to the next Beanhouse. SCOPE’s Special Events Committee brings Beanhouse once a month to the Programming Space and another event, usually a magician or performer. There are loads more events to come.
