On Sunday, the much anticipated Super Bowl LIX took place at the Caeser’s Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The rematch of Super Bowl LVII two years ago resulted as a “revenge win” for the Eagles. The team will bring back the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia after a dominant 40-22 victory over the Chiefs.
The Eagles received first possession and quarterback Jalen Hurts was given the opportunity to spark the amazing night that was ahead of them.
In Philadelphia’s first drive Hurts connected with wide receiver A.J. Brown from a deep pass on fourth and third The pass was ruled incomplete for an offensive pass interference which forced a punt. Kansas City took the field with their three time champion quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the way. After a quick four and out, the Chiefs found themselves punting back to the Eagles.
Philadelphia ran down the field quickly with the help of a penalty on the Chiefs and found themselves punching the ball into the endzone with the infamous ‘Brotherly Shove’ which gave the Eagles an early 7-0 lead. Immediately after the offensive touchdown, rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean intercepted a pass from Mahomes and took it to the endzone for a 14-0 lead. The defensive unit for Philadelphia stifled Mahomes once again, intercepting him on the very next pass after the pick-six. With great field position, Hurts connected with Brown once again for their third touchdown in the first half. A field goal advanced the lead to 27-0 before halftime and left viewers wondering what was happening to the elite Chiefs.
The narrative stayed the same in the second half as the Eagles scored 16 more points. The story of the night revolved around the Eagles defense, led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who sacked Mahomes six times. Mahomes completed two touchdowns, however they were just used to make the game more of a respectable loss.
Hurts lit up the field, going 17-for-22 on pass attempts with a total of 221 yards and two touchdowns. He had 72 rushing yards on just 11 attempts which earned him Super Bowl MVP. Receivers DeVontaReceivers DeVonta Smith and Brown each brought in a touchdown. Smith finished with 69 receiving yards on four receptions while Brown had 43 yards on three catches. Receiver Jahan Dotson racked up 42 yards on two catches. Running back Saquon Barkley finished the game with 57 rushing yards and 40 receiving yards.
