Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday night, the New Haven Chapter of the Delta Chi fraternity welcome it’s neighboring chapters in the Northeast region of the country in Region VII, to the Hilton Garden Inn in Milford, Connecticut for its’ annual Regional Leadership Conference.
The New Haven chapter of the Delta Chi fraternity welcomed the following colleges and universities: University of Southern Maine, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Montclair State University, Rutgers State University of New Jersey, Hamilton College, SUNY Cortland, Hofstra University, Syracuse University, Bryant College, and University of Rhode Island. Each university and college sent two to four different representatives to represent their schools in a weekend long retreat of leadership and team building activities. Attending the leadership conference as well, was the fraternity’s International President, Miles Washburn, Justin Sherman, the Executive Director, Zac Cole, the Associate Executive Director, and other titleholders from the fraternity.
During the weekend-long conference, the different chapters were able to communicate with each other, and meet new brothers from around the country. The different brothers were able to work on different activities that promoted brotherhood, and increased leadership and team building skills. The individuals went to different hour long workshops that included topics that are relevant to each chapter and fraternities as a whole nowadays. The workshops that all individuals attended included: Membership Education, Involvement, Scholarship, Alcohol Abuse, Manpower, and Social Media Usage. The University of New Haven’s own Shelissa Newball, the Assistant Director of Student Activities, also did an excellent presentation on collaboration with other Greeks. After receiving feedback from the different brothers at the end of the conference, many brothers agreed that this conference was nothing but a positive and empowering experience.
The Delta Chi fraternity is an international Greek lettered college social fraternity that was founded at Cornell University on October 13th, 1890. First starting out as a law fraternity, Delta Chi integrated into a general fraternity in 1922. Seven years later, Delta Chi was known to be the first international fraternity to abolish “hell week.” Founded on four principles, promoting friendship, developing character, advancing justice, and assisting in the acquisition of a sound education, Delta Chi is has over 107,000 members. At the University of New Haven, Delta Chi is now the oldest fraternity on campus, founded back in 1981, with 24 active members currently.
