The Chargers men’s and women’s track and field teams were back in action this weekend as they traveled to New York City to compete in the Dr. Sander Scorcher meet, hosted by The Armory. The Chargers did well, with many athletes placing in their respective events.
Senior Joshua Stewart placed within the top five runners with a 7.04 time in the 60-meter dash. Stewart was accompanied in the event by freshman Trevor Rawlinson and graduate student Nile Colson. Rawlinson finished with 7.25, which earned him a 23rd place finish, and Colson was not too far behind with 7.99.
The Chargers ran the table in the men’s triple jump with four athletes placing within the top 25. Junior Matthew Steele led the pack by recording an official jump of 13.92 meters, which gave him sixth place. Close behind Steele was sophomore Luis Calderon, who finished 19th with a 12.6-meter jump. Freshman Daniel Enrico and senior Akin Akinwunmi both had excellent performances. Enrico reached an official jump of 12.53 meter, which earned him 20th place while Akinwunmi finished 21st after his jump of 12.14 meters. Graduate student Jordany Dely headlined in two events, including the men’s 400 meter, where he placed 26th with a time of 51.41. In the 60 meter run, Dely finished 11th out of 30, with 8.14.
For the women’s team, freshman Rayniah Mercedat finished 8th in the 400 meter in 59.88 seconds. Her performance was just one shining moment for the women. Junior Deja-Renee Harris and freshman Lakay-Sha Clarke also competed in the 400 meter. Harris’ time of 1:01.95 placed her 33rd, and Clarke came in with a time of 1:05.90.
In the women’s triple jump, junior Gabrielle Teel placed 22nd after putting up a jump of 11.24m. In the open triple jump, sophomore Aniya Bush placed 13th with a recorded jump of 10.53 meters. Bush also participated in the women’s 60m hurdles, where she placed 45th with a 13.03 time.
Next weekend, the men and women’s track team will travel to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Invitational. The meet will take place at Gordon Track all day Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit NewHavenChargers.com.
